Teeth grinding and jaw clenching are both manifestations of a common condition known as bruxism. Bruxism usually happens unconsciously, and can occur either while you’re awake, or while you’re asleep.
So what’s the difference between teeth grinding and jaw clenching?
Tooth on tooth grinding is more common while you sleep though night jaw clenching still occurs in many people. Waking bruxism is usually characterized by clenching the jaw tightly while you are awake. Clenching and grinding may occur together for some people and others may exhibit only one behavior.
